From Code to Clients: Why Purpose Offers Real Workplace Perspective by Arvinda Rajanna

Arvinda Rajanna’s book hits on a shift a lot of people in tech go through but rarely talk about honestly: what actually happens when you move from building things behind a screen to dealing with human beings in sales. Engineering is structured. You write code, test logic, or solve a clear mechanical problem, and for the most rich part, the rules stay consistent. Sales, on the other hand, is mostly chaotic. It forces you to deal with unpredictable clients, bad advice, rejection, and your own mistakes when a deal goes sideways.

What I appreciate about Arvinda Rajanna’s take is that he doesn’t try to sell you a step-by-step framework or a set of “10 rules for career success.” Corporate literature is already flooded with that kind of fluff. Instead, the book reads like a candid set of working notes from someone who has been in the trenches and had to figure things out the hard way. He makes a crucial distinction early on between being useful and just looking busy. In corporate culture, filling your calendar with meetings and responding to emails instantly often gets mistaken for actual productivity. Rajanna pushes back on that, showing how real trust with customers and colleagues comes from shutting out the workplace noise, taking ownership when things go wrong, and delivering actual value rather than just keeping your head down.

If there’s a weakness to the book, it’s that it leans heavily on reflective advice rather than detailed, play-by-play case studies of specific deals or engineering projects. Readers looking for a dramatic corporate memoir or a technical manual on B2B sales strategies might feel it stays too high-level in places. But as a practical reflection on career pivots, it works well. It gives early-career engineers, new managers, and anyone dealing with an unexpected career shift a realistic, grounded perspective on how to handle the inevitable messiness of a long professional life without losing their mind or their purpose along the way.
