The Chennai Super Kings ended their Indian Premier League 2026 campaign on a disappointing note after suffering a crushing 89-run defeat against the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad. Led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, CSK failed to chase down a daunting target of 230 and were officially knocked out of the playoff race. The defeat marked a difficult end to an inconsistent season for the five-time champions.
Following the match, the IPL Governing Council announced disciplinary action against the Chennai franchise for maintaining a slow over-rate during the game. Since it was the team’s second offence of the season under the league’s Code of Conduct, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was fined Rs 24 lakh. The rest of the playing XI, including the Impact Player, were fined Rs 6 lakh each or 25 percent of their match fees, whichever was lower.
CSK’s chase began disastrously as wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson was dismissed for a golden duck. Despite a quickfire 47 off 17 balls from Shivam Dube, Chennai never truly recovered from the early collapse and eventually succumbed to a heavy defeat against a dominant Gujarat side led by Shubman Gill.
In its official statement, the IPL confirmed the sanctions, stating that Gaikwad’s penalty was imposed under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct related to minimum over-rate offences. The governing body added that all remaining members of the playing XI would also face financial penalties due to the repeated offence.
The disappointing campaign has raised serious questions about CSK’s future, particularly with uncertainty surrounding MS Dhoni and the underwhelming performances of several senior players. The franchise is now expected to reassess its squad and strategy ahead of the next IPL season as it looks to rebuild after an underwhelming 2026 campaign.
